Twice as many Stars

Ceramics are another medium that I work in, and I like to use my illustration and graphic design skills to create sculptures and stoneware.

In this project, I proposed creating a sculpture that depicts a two-headed calf between life and death. Calfs born with polycephaly cannot live past a few weeks and usually pass after the first night or so. In this piece, I was inspired by the poem “Two-Headed Calf” by Laura Gilpin.

To further insinuate the allegory of life and death, half of the calf is painted to resemble a starry night, as that painting depicts ideas of death and the afterlife. That side also has glazed-over eyes and seems to have already accepted its fate. The more naturalistic side is looking down and clinging to the life it has left.
