Phantom of the Opera Dust Cover Redesign
Our class was directed to take a classic piece of literature and revamp the cover design. We started by looking at different traditional novel designs and talking about what worked and didn’t work from there.
Once working independently, I began to make lists of my favorite pieces of literature. I knew the most critical thing to depict on the cover was the Phantom appearing grotesque and monstrous as he is written to me. Modern media has always given him a more pleasing appearance when he was more like a walking corpse with parchment-like skin.
After sketching out various compositions, I decided on one where the Phantom grabs onto Christine, who is still trance-like. The color palate is tight yet vibrant and helps to tie all the imagery together. The main title is hand-lettered as a call back to the more traditional treatment.
